May 2016: Giorgio Ascoli is the recent recipient of a high prestige travel award from the Burrows Wellcome Fund. The BWF awards its Collaborative Research Travel Grant to enable joint research efforts between researchers from separate organizations engaging in “research of the highest impact.” In his project entitled “Barcode sequencing of axonal projections to classify long-range cortical neurons,” Ascoli will make use of a technique developed by Dr. Zador of Cold Spring Harbor. The travel grant will allow Ascoli to learn the technique in the inventor’s lab. He will make use of it in his own lab to map neurons in the entorhinal cortex, a less-studied area of the brain.
