Interior construction was recently completed on the upper level of Krasnow's new wing. This gave the Institute the opportunity to welcome Dan Cox and his lab to the Krasnow Institute from the Prince William Campus. The new wing is also home to the labs of Nadine Kabbani and Robert Lipsky and is the home of the new microscopic imagining center.

 

Plans continue to move forward with the newest wing which will be a mirror image of the most recent addition. This will double the research space currently available at the Institute and provide Krasnow the capability to further the study of neuroscience at George Mason University. A virtual groundbreaking ceremony is due to be held in April with the work to begin sometime this spring.

 

February 3, 2010

On February 3, Krasnow's Center for Social Complexity hosted a visit by Nobelist Elinor (Lin) Ostrom, from Indiana University. She was greeted by Krasnow Director Jim Olds and Claudio Cioffi. Center members had a unique opportunity to discuss current projects with Ostrom and her the latest on her forthcoming publications and projects on socio-ecological complexity and sustainability.

 

October 20, 2008

 

On Monday, October 20, Congressman Tom Davis visited the Krasnow Institute and received an appreciation award from director Jim Olds on behalf of the institute. 

 

 

Over the course of ten years, Mr. Davis has supported the Institute by attending our open houses and special events.  The whole institute staff and the Krasnow Advisory Board gathered to witness Mr. Davis receive a blanket and a plaque which recognized and thanked him for his decade of support.

 

 

June 17, 2008

On Tuesday, June 17, the Krasnow Institute welcomed the Austrian Embassy's Attaché for Science & Technology on a visit to the Institute. Mr. Philipp Marxgut took a tour of the institute building with director Jim Olds and then shared lunch with him and two of the Institute's faculty.  Following their meal, Claudio Cioffi walked Marxgut to the Center for Social Complexity for an in-depth tour of the Center's research.

Mason moves ahead with Krasnow 3: Planning for the next phase of Krasnow building is underway.  The kick-off meeting for the "Krasnow 3 " building expansion was held on Thursday, June 5, when members of the architectural firm Cooper Cary met with campus facilities and Krasnow representatives.  Cooper Cary will prepare the RFP for the building contract. It is hoped that the a building company can be selected and construction work started by late spring 2009.

 

May 22-23, 2008

On May 22nd and 23rd all scientific members of the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study, from students to senior researchers, gathered for the Institute's annual science retreat.  During the one and one-half day retreat, members of the various labs delivered reports of their research and future directions for their fellows in other labs. 

  The retreat offers an opportunity for members from Krasnow's diverse research areas to experience, understand, and perhaps even incorporate approaches and insights,  from other areas for the benefit of their own research and the advancement of science.

Dr. Claudio Cioffi-Revilla from Krasnow was recognized as a Galileo Award Finalist at a ceremony presided by J. Michael McConnell, Director of National Intelligence, for his paper entitled "Beyond the Visible Spectrum: Applied Computational Social Science for Boosting Intelligence Analysis". The Galileo Award competition is a new annual event for intelligence analysts to write on innovative approaches for improving the national intelligence capacity in areas of high priority. Dr. Cioffi wrote his paper while serving last year at the US Department of State as a Jefferson Science Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences and Senior Science and Technology Advisor in the Office of The Geographer and Global Issues. Dr. Lee Schwartz, The Geographer of the State Department, who sponsored and worked closely with Dr. Cioffi, also attended the restricted invitation-only awards ceremony held at the Defense Intelligence Analysis Center DIAC at Bolling AFB, headquarters of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Others present included the Galileo Award winners and finalists, chiefs and deputies of the sixteen agencies of the intelligence community, and special guests.
