MRI Suite Safety Rules
Any researcher who uses the imaging facility is required to set up and clean up properly.
Set Up and Scanning
- Only the MRI technologist may operate the scanner.
- The PI or safety approved designate of the PI must be present during scanning.
- No one (including researchers and assistants) may enter the console room without being screened by the MRI technologist.
- Subjects must sign consent and screening forms before they are scanned. Those forms must be present at the time of scanning.
- If there are any questions regarding subject's compatibility with the magnetic field, the MRI Technologist’s recommendation will be followed.
- Anyone entering the console room must first "de-metal" (empty pockets; remove jewelry, watches, wallets, beepers, hair clips; and leave pens, clipboards etc. outside).
- Hearing protection (in the form of BOTH earplugs or headphones) must be used when scanning all subjects.
- The scanner bed will not support subjects weighing more than 350 pounds.
- Screening forms and consent forms are to be kept in a folder and presented to the MRI Technologist at the time of the scan. The use of paper clips, staples, or other small metal objects to fasten papers is not permitted anywhere in the imaging suite.
Food and Drink
- No food or drinks are allowed in the magnet lab areas. The ONLY exception is that research subjects may have a drink of water prior to or immediately following an experiment.
- No food wrappers of any kind should be thrown in the wastebaskets.
