Profiles

The AALRC is directed by an educator within a neuroscience setting. This cross-disciplinary arrangement was promoted by the Graduate School of Education at George Mason University with the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study, which focuses on cognitive research.

Barbara K. Given joined the GMU Department of Education in the Fall of 1974 to initiate the Special Education Teacher Preparation Program. She served as the Program's Coordinator and a member of the Graduate School of Education faculty. Currently, she is Co-Director of the Adolescent and Adult Learning Research Center at GMU's Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study. For more information about Dr. Given, please visit her website.

Linda Kirby is a Ph.D. student with a major in Neuropedagogy (her term) and a minor in Biopsychology at GMU. She has taught Montessori preschool to practicing teachers at the Master's level. She reviews documents from the Youth of Promise Project (YoP) and is surveying YoP teachers and their principals for project impact. She also conducts literature reviews for Project staff.

Julie Ennis has 30 years teaching and educational consulting experience in England, Australia and USA. She holds degrees in French, Archaeology, TESOL, and Special Education. AALRC responsibilities include: administration and scoring of individual and group psychometric assessments, report writing, on-site coordination of middle/high school projects, data entry and interpretation.

EEG Team

Sharmila Chari completed her doctoral studies in Clinical Psychology at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, Bangalore, India. She is the coordinator of the EEG team and is responsible for EEG research design, implementation, data acquisition and analysis. Orang Firoozi joined the AALRC in the summer of 2002 as an EEG/Information Technology Specialist after completing a Bachelors degree in Decision Sciences/Management Information Systems with training in IT management at GMU. Orang completed specialized EEG/ERP Acquisition and Analysis training at the NeuroScan School in El Paso, Texas, and is currently the EEG/IT Coordinator.

Tracy Cappiccille graduated from King's College in Wilkes-Barre, PA with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. She is currently enrolled in a Biopsychology Master's degree at GMU. Her AALRC duties include EEG acquisition, data analysis and thesis research.

Vijay Malgari is pursuing post master's course work in the School of Information Technology and Engineering. He has a MS degree in Information Systems (GMU) and Bachelor's in Technology majoring in Electrical Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, India. With the AALRC Vijay is helping to design and develop the Adult Reading Assesment Tool. Before that he was a GRA at the School of Management at GMU.
