     Barbara K. Given, Ph.D. is Co-Director of the Adolescent and Adult Learning Research Center with James Olds who is also Director of the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study. Given first came to George Mason University in the Fall of 1974 to initiate the special education teacher preparation program. She served as its coordinator (intermittently) for several years; initiated and directed summer camps for emotionally disturbed, learning disabled youth for six years; directed several federally funded teacher preparation and research projects; taught clinical psychoeducational assessment, and special education teacher preparation courses for 28 years.

     Given joined the Krasnow Institute as a faculty researcher in 1998, and upon Graduate School of Education retirement in 2003, she became a faculty researcher (.95FTE) at Krasnow. Given has leadership responsibility for the AALRC, the conduct of project operations, grant conceptualization and writing, monitoring of expenditures, and
 personnel selections. She works with the AALRC team to design and implement: research and methodological procedures, data analysis, manuscript development, and construction of products (QLL Reading Assessment tool; QLL Reading Intervention; phonological cards, and teaching manual). She is responsible for Human Subjects Review Board compliance, and is the liaison between the AALRC and public schools where research is conducted.

     Given lives in Old Town, VA where she enjoys bicycling and walking. Her married son and his wife live in Chesterfield, VA and her married daughter and her husband live in Ocean City, MD.
